Economic Interactions and Flows: Information Flows

The Philippines: The World's Hotline

I read a very interesting article about the World's Hotline in the Philippines. After reading this, it explains how the Philippines have a more successful Hotline compared to India, because of the Western Influence. Because of the constant influence American culture has on the Philippines, Filipino's are very much like American's, and they speak very good English, but more importantly, it's very cheap in the Philippines and this is the main reason why the United States outsource to the Philippines, as Bong Borja, the Philippine president of the Aegis People Support quotes "To an American, the Philippine accent appears clear and neutral."It's interesting how when American's call American companies, in this case an American calling to book his flight from Detroit to New York was transferred to the Philippines, and this leads me to ask this question:

Call centre
The Philippines now has more call centre workers compared
to India

Clearly the Western influence on the Philippines have caused a tie between the two countries and it's interesting to think about if this influence wasn't present, how would the Philippines end up being like?

  1. I believe that even if the United States did not chose the Philippines to be their choice, the Philippines would still be successful in the call center industry as there are many companies and org's within the country and within asia that also use the Philippine call centers, But it would definitely not improve and expand as rapidly as it is today.

  2. This is a very broad, loaded, hypothetical, and FUN question to ask I think Jordan. You have sort of opened the door to the possibility of asking many hypothetical questions. Like, what if China was the main superpower offshoring? Where would they send their jobs? Or, if the European Union didn't allow the free flow of people, how would that affect the Eurozone? I think your question is just too hard to answer because of the complex history involved. Haha, don't expect any closure on this one.

  3. Wow Jordan, it was interesting to know that Philippines has more call center than in India, does that tell that Philippines has the most call centers and customers overall in the Asia? Secondly, does Filipinos workers who work in call center get a lot of income? thank you :)
